Hedgehogs and Flowers

November 8, 2012
A painted image of a hedgehog skull surrounded by slugs, twigs, and hydrangea blossoms.

Gouache, watercolour, acrylic, ink. 10″ x 14″. October 2012.

Part of a series of experiments for my Advanced Illustration Seminar class. I wanted to get my hands dirty, both literally and figuratively, and use some of the messier media at my disposal. I decided to try out Yupo, which is a 100% polypropylene sheet that’s used as paper for paintings; it allows you to work with wet media for longer and to go back and rework it (or even remove it entirely) by adding water. Yupo’s a real challenge to work with, but very rewarding.

The flowers are hydrangeas, and that’s a hedgehog skull. I loosely based the composition on death portraits and memorial frames.
