The task: choose one or two works by master painters and create your image(s) following the original aspect ratio. Final image(s) must be at least 20 square feet in size. Use whatever materials best fit your image. Try not to panic.

Charcoal and graphite

Based on The Inspiration of Saint Matthew by Caravaggio. 2.5′ x 4′ (yes, feet. I had to use the wall as a drawing board.)

Charcoal and graphite

Based on The Entombment of Christ, also by Caravaggio. 2.5′ x 4′.

These were incredibly exhausting drawings. I chose Caravaggio because I love high contrast, and I wanted to be able to recreate both that and the incredible smoothness of his subjects. Unfortunately, I underestimated both the time it would take to achieve that smoothness and how much charcoal I would actually need. When these were finished (approx. 12 hours solid work), I was light gray and sneezing charcoal dust.
